March 2007
Board News:
The next Board of Directors Meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April
11, 2007 at Tunxis Plantation CC.
Dinner Meeting:
The next Dinner Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2007
at Tunxis Plantation CC. All members are encouraged to bring
a non-perishable food item or a health or beauty product to the meeting as
a kick-off for our Food Drive.
The speaker at the March meeting was John Alcorn of the Italian Studies Program at Trinity College. He spoke about the Sicilian Mafia and included Sicilian proverbs. We also voted to donate $200 to Trinity College toward the Barbieri Endowment for a student to study at Trinity’s Rome campus.
If a dinner meeting is cancelled for any reason, we will simply wait until the second Wednesday of the next month for the next meeting. If you are not sure if the meeting is going to be held, please call the chapter president.
Three Men and a Baby (Grand) a tribute to Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin:
This event, held at 3 p.m. on March 25, 2007 at St. Joseph College in West
Hartford, was a big success. Our chapter sold all the tickets we had
available for sale. Also involved were the Newington, Manchester, Hartford
and Wethersfield chapters.
Web Site:
The new Web site, www.Farmington-unico.org (note
the dash between Farmington and UNICO), is up! Thank you to Webmaster
Anna Pizzoferrato for her efforts to create it.
Each committee must get its information onto the Web site. We also need anything about the history of our chapter, including remembrances of members who have passed away.
Contact Paul Moschella, Ralph Arcari or Anna if you have any content you would like to have put on the site. Paul can be reached via e-mail at mosch@Hartford.edu.
There is a members only section. To access it, the user id is: unico;
the password is: 4members. Note that all letters are in lower case.
Scholarship:
The Scholarship Committee is seeking to give between $4,000 and $6,000 in scholarships
this year. It met at Jim Kane’s office in March to review the applications
that were submitted. They also interviewed the candidates.
Charity:
The Charity Committee recommended the following donations: $500 to Conard High
School and $425 to the Farmington/Plainville Midget Football League.
We also are paying $100 for an ad in the program book for the Farmington Police Benevolent Association.
Community Service Day is April 14, 2007. The Outreach Committee has organized a food drive for that day. Collections will take place at Highland Market in Farmington from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. All items collected will be delivered to the Farmington Food Pantry from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Items needed are health and beauty products (other than peanut butter) and non-perishable foods. Please check expiration dates.
At the next Dinner Meeting you can donate a food item and sign up for a 30-minue time slot to participate.
Celebrate! West Hartford:
Ralph Arcari is in negotiations with the organizers regarding whether we need
a booth. At present we are strongly considering selling Italian Ice. Details
to come. This committee needs a chairman or chairwoman.
Membership:
There is a discount for new members who are between the ages of 18 and 25.
Good and Welfare:
A tough month. Fruit baskets were sent to Guido Marino, Sal Pistritto
and Enzo DeDominicis. Guido is weakened from an ailing heart. Sal
had surgery. Enzo had multiple issues, including broken ribs, a spot
discovered on his lung and intestinal bleeding.
Our condolences to Mike Marroni, whose mother passed away in February.
If anyone is aware of another member who is ailing, please contact Frank Virnelli with the information. Frank will e-mail the membership so they can send their support. Always include what support would be appreciated (e.g., visits, cards only, a telephone call, etc.)
Golf:
The new Golf Committee Chairman is Paul Pedemonti. The tournament will
be held on Friday, June 8, 2007 at Stanley Golf Course in New Britain.
Treasury:
As of February 7, 2007, we had $286.85 in the operating account and $6,001.44
in the charity account, a total of $6,288.29.
Dues notices for the second half of the year are out. Pay as soon as possible. Those who do not pay by the end of our fiscal year will be removed from the chapter.
Bocce Courts:
The chapter voted to name the bocce courts in honor of Frank Gencarelli. Frank
was our first President, organized the chapter in the first place and was active
both in Connecticut and at the national level. Ralph Arcari is still
working on this.
The Wethersfield chapter is holding a chapter v. chapter bocce competition on June 16, 2007. President Avenoso is checking into the details.
Installation Night:
The Country Club of Farmington has been reserved for Thursday, June 7, 2007.
